Glasses Care & Cleaning Guide

Glasses Care & Cleaning Guide

Looking after your glasses properly extends their life by years and keeps your lenses scratch-free. A few simple habits make all the difference.

Daily care

Cleaning your lenses

  1. Run lukewarm water over both lenses.
  2. Apply a small drop of mild liquid soap (washing-up liquid is fine) to each lens.
  3. Rub gently with your fingertips for a few seconds.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under running water.
  5. Shake off excess water, then dry with a clean microfibre cloth.

Don’t use: paper towels, tissues, kitchen roll, the corner of your shirt, glass cleaner, household cleaning sprays, or anything containing alcohol or ammonia. They scratch lenses and break down coatings over time.

Storage

When you’re not wearing your glasses, store them in their case. Lenses face up if you’re placing them down briefly without a case.

What to avoid

  • Heat: never leave glasses on a sunny dashboard, near a radiator, or in a sauna. Lens coatings crack from extreme heat.
  • One-handed removal: always take glasses off with both hands. Pulling from one side warps the frame.
  • Pushing onto your head: common habit, but it stretches the temples and damages the hinges over time.
  • Hairspray, perfume, sunscreen: chemical sprays can damage coatings. Apply them before putting glasses on.

Maintenance

Tightening loose screws

If your frame feels wobbly, the temple screws may have worked loose. A small precision screwdriver (the kind sold for spectacle repair) is enough to tighten them. Don’t over-tighten — you’ll strip the thread.

Adjusting fit

If your glasses slide down your nose or pinch your temples, take them to any registered optician for a free adjustment. We don’t recommend bending frames yourself.

Replacing nose pads

Silicone nose pads on metal frames wear over a year or two. We’ll send replacements free of charge — just contact us with your order number.

What to do if…

You drop your glasses

Inspect the frame for cracks. Check the lenses for chips at the edges (which can spread). If anything looks damaged, stop wearing them and contact us.

A lens pops out

Plastic frames have a groove that holds the lens in place. The lens can usually be popped back in by gently flexing the frame. Metal frames have a small screw on the rim — loosen it slightly, refit the lens, retighten. If you’re unsure, any optician will do this for free.

You see a crack in your lens

Stop wearing them. A cracked lens can deteriorate quickly and may not be safe. Contact us about replacement lenses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean my lenses with a tissue?

Don’t. Tissues, kitchen roll, and paper towels are all abrasive enough to leave fine scratches over time. Use a microfibre cloth.

How often should I clean my lenses?

Daily for clear vision. A quick soap-and-water wash every morning makes a noticeable difference.

What’s the best lens cleaner?

Plain water and a drop of mild soap is best. Dedicated lens cleaning sprays are fine — just check the label for “ammonia free”.

Can I use the same case for sunglasses and reading glasses?

You can, but storing two pairs together can scratch the lenses against each other. A case per pair is safer.
